800% More Popular Than Star Wars

Do you know what video is the most popular single-day video in the history of the internet?  Vanity Fair released a trailer for the new Star Wars movie in May which got a whopping 1.54 million views.  It’s not bad but on Monday June 1st, they released a trailer that got more than 8 times that many views.

Unless you’ve been under a rock, you probably know that it was the video of Caitlyn formerly Bruce Jenner.  The most impressive number is that stories about Jenner accounted for 7% of all attention online on Monday across the network of Chartbeat which a web analytics company employed by many media companies.  Almost 1 out of every 10 minutes of internet attention was on Jenner at least on Chartbeats sites, mashable.com.

You might be thinking what, if anything, does this have to do with your online success?  First, you must entertain.  People say that they want education and information but they click on entertainment.  You must always entertain even if you’re selling info.

Second, don’t reinvent the wheel.  Stories about Bruce and his children and step-children, The Kardashians have hogged attention for years.  Don’t try to generate buzz for something new.
